Rob Ruffin is a Boston-based contrarian value investor. Rob specializes in taking advantage of political turmoil. His investment process has been seasoned through multiple bubbles and crashes. His formal training includes completing the CFA and CAIA programs in addition to receiving an MBA with a concentration in Finance from Babson College’s F.W. Olin School of Business.
Rob has presented at the YYX Toronto Value Symposium every year since its inception. Each year he presented a security that returned more than 100% within the first year. Last year Rob’s presentation on Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX) LEAPs and equity was selected for inclusion at the 2018 Fairfax Shareholder’s Dinner. Rob is invited back as a guest speaker to share commentary and new ideas at this year’s Fairfax Shareholder’s Dinner.
Tim is the founder and President of McElvaine Investment Management Ltd., investment advisor to The McElvaine Investment Trust. Tim developed his value-oriented philosophy during his 12-year career with Peter Cundill & Associates Ltd. where, amongst other capacities, he served as Manager of the Cundill Security Fund (1992-1999), Co-Manager of the Cundill Value Fund (1998-2003) and Chief Investment Officer (1998-2003). Tim had previously earned a Bachelor of Commerce from Queen’s University in 1986, qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1988 and as a Chartered Financial Analyst in 1991. After working at Touche Ross in Toronto (1986-1989), Tim started his investment career with Bank of N.T. Butterfield in Bermuda (1989-1991) and joined Peter Cundill in 1991.
Tim has served on the Board of Directors of several publicly listed companies where The McElvaine Investment Trust held a significant investment including: Sun-Rype Products Ltd, Humpty Dumpty Snack Foods Inc, Rainmaker Entertainment Inc. and Glacier Media Inc.
Tim has been a speaker at value investing conferences including the Value Investing Seminar in Italy, Institute of Advanced Financial Planners Annual Symposium and The Ben Graham Centre’s Value Investing Conference in Toronto. In addition, Tim has appeared on BNN, Globe and Mail, Financial Post, Outstanding Investor Digest, Manual of Ideas and has been featured in the investment book Stock Market Superstars.
